Spaces, Inc. Project Profile: Crossroads Academy of Kansas City

When Spaces, Inc. heard The Crossroads Academy of Kansas City, a K-8 education center, was renovating an existing 2-story building, we jumped at the chance to be a part of it. In December 2014, Crossroads was renovating the existing building adjacent to the Academy for their new middle school. Spaces, Inc., along with General Contractor McCown Gordon and architects from BNIM, revitalized the existing building to provide a useable and sustainable space for The Crossroads Academy of Kansas City.

The Crossroads Academy of Kansas City was a large project that included a moveable wall system, 18 classrooms and three small collaboration rooms. Many elements of the project are meant to be interactive and changeable, since the academy will be a completely multipurpose educational building. The moveable wall, a framed glass storefront captured by sheetrock side walls and reassembled shelving helped to create an atmosphere where the students can thrive and make the most use of the space.

Spaces Inc. worked with General Contractor McCown Gordon and Architect BNIM to complete this project. During a facility tour, BNIM Architects decided to use sustainable DIRTT interior walls. DIRTT interior walls have been proven to be a better investment than conventional construction without the additional cost.

Crossroads Academy of Kansas City’s goal is to be the premier urban school for Kansas City’s youth and a destination for other educators seeking inspiration and best practices.
